Resumen

VEGA MONTALVO, Raiza et al. Potencial fototóxico de una preparación obtenida del mangle rojo. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2003, vol.8, n.2. ISSN 1028-4796.

The phototoxic effect of a preparation for veterinary use denominated Cikron-H obtained from the extract of the cortex of mangrove tree was evaluated in an in vivo model. Hartley albinic guinea pigs with body weight between 300 and 500 g were used. All the animals were previously depilated and shaved in the scapular region and they were administered a dose of 50.4 J/cm2 of UVA light during a period of 2 hours. These effects were observed immediately after the irradiation at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Draize's scale was applied to evaluate skin lesions. In the observation carried out at 24 hours it was found a degree III erythema in the skin of all male and female animals that was constant for 72 hours. From the histological point of view, these alterations were not severe enough to characterize a phototoxic response. In the observation made at 24 hours in the placebo, it was observed a degree I erythema in the skin of all animals. On the microscope, in the case of females, it was observed a very mild edema, whereas among males the skin was practically normal. Finally, it should be stressed that the microscopic observations found did not confirm the appearance of a phototoxic response of Cikron-H.
