Resumen
LAGARTO PARRA, Alicia et al. Toxicidad aguda oral e irritación sobre mucosa bucal del extracto oleoso de Melanthera deltoidea Mich. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2003, vol.8, n.3. ISSN 1028-4796.
The oily extract of Melanthera deltoidea Mitch has proved to have anesthetic, analgesic and antiinflammatory properties in previous trials. As these characteristics make it attractive for its use in dentistry, it is important to know its toxic potential in preclinical trials. The oily extract of Melanthera deltoiodea Mitch was evaluated in a trial of acute oral toxicity in rats and of irritation of the oral mucous membrane in hamsters at repeated doses. Female Wistar rats (200-300 g) were orally administered at a unique dose of 1 000 mg/Kg, whereas Golden Syrian female hamsters (50-60 g) were administered the oily extract at 35 % in the right gular pocket during the 14 days of treatment. No mortality was reported in the trial of acute toxicity and it was obtained an index of irritation of the oral mucous membrane of 10.25. The oily extract was classified as moderately irritant.
