Resumen

HABIB INTERSIMONE, Natalia; DAUD THOENE, Adriana  y  SANCHEZ RIERA, Alicia. Diuretic effect of aqueous and alcoholic extracts from flowers of Phrygilanthus acutifolius (corpo) in rats. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.3-4. ISSN 1028-4796.

An experimental study was conducted in Wistar rats, to evaluate the potential diuretic effect of aqueous and ethanol extracts of flowers from Phrygilanthus acutifolius (Ruiz & Pav.) Eichler in doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg of body weight. Results were compared to those obtained from furosemide in dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight (reference diuretic) and saline solution (negative control). Urinary excretion was measured at 24 h, and the concentration of Na+ , K+ , Cl- , Ca2+ and P was determined in the final volume. Diuretic action of extracts from Phrygilanthus acutifolius was confirmed. Aqueous and ethanol extracts at the dose of 200 mg/kg of body weight demonstrated more natriuretic activity than the others studied doses. On comparing them with furosemide, it was observed that the excretion of potassium in urine decrease, which suggested a diuretic action acting as potassium savers. Further researches are necessary to elucidate the mechanism of diuretic action of the analyzed extracts.

Palabras clave : Phrygilanthus acutifolius; plant extracts; diuretics; medicinal plants; furosemide.
