RIOS, María Yolanda  e  AGUILAR-GUADARRAMA, A. Berenice. Indolic alkaloids, terpenes, sterols and flavonoids from the leaves of Hamelia patens Jacquin (Rubiaceae). Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2006, vol.11, n.1. ISSN 1028-4796.

Hamelia patens Jacquin is a plant used in Mexican traditional medicine associated with antimicrobial, antiinflamatory and analgesic properties. In the present study, the content of chemical compounds of the dry leaves from H. Patens, which is original from Campeche, México, was determined. 10 natural products were identified in these parts of the plant by chemical analysis: 24-methylenecycloartane-3ß-ol, 24-methylcycloart-24-en-3ß-ol, 2 E - 3,7,11,15,19 - pentamethyl-2-eicosane-1-ol, stigmasterol, ß-sitosterol, ursolic acid, aricine, oxindole aricine, rotundic acid and catequine that were extracted by maceration of the leaves with acetone and purified by column chromatography. Spectroscopic and spectrometric methods were used to dilucidate the chemical structures of these natural products. The identification of the different compounds established that the metabolic content of this species is chemically in accordance with the other species of Hamelia and with the Rubiaceae family; however, it is the first occasion in which cycloartenols and tripertenes of this genus are isolated, a fact that offers new perspectives to the knowledge about the chemical composition of this plant.

Palavras-chave : Hamelia patens Jacquin; Rubiaceae; polyprenols; cycloartenols; tripertenes; indolic alkaloids; flavonoids.
