ORTIZ SANCHEZ, Yurisnel; LOPEZ GONZALEZ, Tania; PADRO RODRIGUEZ, Lourdes  y  VELASQUEZ ALMENARES, Yunior. Stability of two Pedilanthus tithymaloides (L) Poit (ítamo real) tinctures. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.2. ISSN 1028-4796.

INTRODUCTION: Pedilanthus tithymaloides (L) Point (ítamo real) is traditionally used in dentistry due to its antiinflammatory effect. OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the stability of two itamo real tinctures stored under refrigeration conditions and at room temperature for one year. METHODS: the stability of two P. tithymaolides tinctures made from the plant´s dry leaves, using 30% and 50% hydroalcohol solutions, which were prepared through maceration. Some quality and microbiologic studies were conducted and the active components of tinctures were determined. RESULTS: the quality indexes were kept in all the batches during the period, without any significant differences. The microbial count was kept below the allowable levels and no pathogenic microorganisms were observed in the course of the experiment. It was confirmed that secondary metabolites like flavonoids, phenols, tannins, aminoacids, coumarins and quinolones were present. CONCLUSIONS: these results showed that the studied tinctures can be preserved in amber bottles at room temperature and under refrigeration for one year, with no quality deterioration.
