Resumen

Introduction: Cajanus indicus Spreng. (gandul) is of great therapeutic interest mainly in the search of vegetal compounds capable of inhibiting cancerous processes through the antimycotic mechanism. Objectives: to determine the agricultural aspects that favour higher production of the aerial part of this plant to this end. Methods: in the 2007-2009 period, several research studies were performed in "Dr Juan Tomás Roig" experimental center of medicinal plants. In July, 2007 a study was conducted to analyze the behaviour of the plant and to determine the cutting height that will encourage the best sprout. From February 2008 to February 2009, 2 sowing distances (90 x 30 cm and 90 x 60 cm) and 2 times of harvest starting (3 and 4 months of age) were studied. Results: it was confirmed that C. indicus can adequately sprout after the foliage cutting at any of the tested height. Regarding the sowing distances and the moment of harvesting, there were highly significant differences and also interactions among them in terms of total foliage throughput; there was proved that the tested sowing distances had similar behaviour and that the harvest starting at 4 months, the second harvest and the second year of experimentation were the best, all this as a possible result of the weather conditions, mainly the abundant raining in the March-December period of 2009. Likewise, it was determined that the total foliage throughput around 50 %- is useful volume made up of thin stems, leaves and sometimes flowers and the rest of thick 0.8-1.2 cm stems that should be excluded. Conclusions: it is recommended to sow the plant at the end of February to obtain the greatest quantity of useful aerial part, to use the sowing distance of 90 x 60 cm and to start harvesting foliage at 4 months of age, thus obtaining as much vegetal material as possible with required quality.
