Introduction:

gastroschisis is a congenital malformation characterized by a visceral herniation through a defect in the abdominal wall. It is commonly located to the right of the umbilical cord with visceral protrusion mainly of the distal ileum, stomach and liver; and it is not covered by a protective membrane. The prevalence of gastroschisis is 0.5-7 per 10,000 live newborns, with an average of 1/2700 births worldwide. The highest prevalence of cases with gastroschisis occurs in young mothers <20 years and poor nutritional status.

Case description:

18-year-old mother, with a gyneco-obstetric history of poor prenatal care. Prenatal ultrasound was not performed, a newborn is born in the “General Madre Obrera” public hospital in the Llallagua municipality, department of Potosí at 39.1 weeks, weighing 2,375 grams, delivery by caesarean section, with Apgar score of 1 minute and at the fifth minute, he is immediately resuscitated with penlon oxygen, endotracheal intubation and administration of intravenous adrenaline, he is unable to recover and dies at 10 minutes of life with a diagnosis of gastroschisis.

Discussion:

early recognition of this pathology is essential to prevent fatal complications. It allows considering different therapeutic-surgical approaches to reach a higher survival rate, especially in areas where the incidence is high as in our environment with an average of 17 annual cases and a survival of only 47%.

Conclusions:

gastroschisis has a high survival rate in countries where there is appropriate prenatal control and early diagnosis; In this reported case, ultrasounds were not performed as part of the follow-up of the mother of this newborn.
