Introduction:

During the undergraduate medical practitioner training, the student assuming the role of the physician undertake actions according to the curricular requirements and content of the profession; and at the same time, acquires the legal and ethical foundations to be used in his future professional career.

Objective:

To evaluate the patient round from a medical and pedagogical point of view.

Method:

A pedagogically-focused descriptive study was conducted at the Hospital “Dr. Agostinho Neto” in Guantanamo. The methods used were: analysis-synthesis, documentary study, the systemic-structural method and systematization. A bibliographic review was carried out in the following medical databases (SciELO, LILACS, REDALYC), using the following descriptors: patient round, medical education, education at work.

Results:

During the patient rounding implementation in healthcare sittings, the student-professor-basic work team interaction enhanced the learning process of the students, giving them a leading role in their self-learning skills. It also promoted a link between medical education and medical practice through the interaction with the patient; and group learning through socialization with the work team.

Conclusions:

Essential information on the pedagogical and didactic foundations of the patient round was pointed out. A didactic principle is found in the process, defining the dynamics of the patient round: principle of synergistic interaction between professor, student, members of the basic work team, and the patient in his/her family and social environment during the patient rounding process.

Palabras clave : patient round; education at work; higher medical education.
