Abstract
GUEVARA COSME, Jorge Antonio et al. Risk factors of low birth weight in Palma Soriano Maternal Hospital during a triennium. MEDISAN [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.2. ISSN 1029-3019.
A case-control study was carried out to identify some of the epidemiologic factors which caused 158 newborns with low birth weight in "Nelia Irma Delfín Ripoll" Teaching Gynecologic and Obstetric Hospital in Palma Soriano municipality (Santiago de Cuba province), from January, 2005 to December, 2007. The results were validated by means of the crossed products ratio and by the percentage exposed attributable risk. The variables such as maternal age, nutritional evaluation at their first visit, weight gain and maternal diseases associated to pregnancy were analyzed, and it was concluded that these, except age, constituted risk factors for the birth of underweight children. Among the risk factors there were also, preterm birth, and the associated diseases were: pregnancy-induced blood pressure, urinary sepsis, vaginal infection and anemia.
