A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out in 60 aged people referred to the dementia outpatient department at "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital of Santiago de Cuba during 2005, in order to characterize them by means of a geriatric exhaustive evaluation. Among the main results female sex, age group of 70 -79 years and diagnosis of dementia with a good functionality prevailed. There was not an appropriate clinical correlation between the initial and definitive diagnosis. It was recommended to train family physicians in this disease to achieve a better progress of patients.
