Abstract

The Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic type that affected the Cuban people in 1992 and which represented an important challenge for the ophthalmologists from the country, has been considered the greatest epidemic of the nervous system in the XX century. Taking this into account, a review on the topic was carried out in the collected literature, the author's practical experience on the topic was exposed, and all the obtained information was orderly distributed for the present work: historical background (from the XIX century), situation in Cuba when the epidemic occurred, as well as the evolutive periods accepted up to now and the defense of the possibility that another can be added. The possible triggering mechanisms of the morbid process, its sequelae and the current situation of this health problem are also analyzed.
