A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in 36 children with sepsis admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of "Juan de la Cruz Martínez Maceira" Northern Teaching Children Hospital of Santiago de Cuba during 2010 to characterize them according to some clinical epidemiological variates. Age group of 1-4 years (25.0%), male sex (55.5%) and severity of the sepsis (50.0%) prevailed. Malnutrition was the most frequent risk factor in the series, with 50.0% of the total, followed by nonbreastfeeding (44.4%), while respiratory infections constituted the main cause of the sepsis (47.2%) and the Staphylococcus aureus was the mostly isolated microorganism (27.8%). Of the patients, 31 were alive at the discharge (86.1%), but there were 5 deaths, with 13.9%.of mortality.
