Abstract

A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out in 637 patients over 15 years, who attended the Endoscopy Department of "Jorge Rodríguez" Comprehensive Diagnosis Center, belonging to Torres Municipality in Lara State (Venezuela), from January to April 2009, due to symptoms and signs of upper gastrointestinal tract diseases. Patients underwent endoscopy to identify the most frequent lesions and their epidemiological characteristics. Mucosal lesions in any segment of the upper gastrointestinal tract, being gastritis the most frequent condition, female sex and age group of 30-59 years prevailed in the results of the series, as well as risk factors: poor nutritional habits and alcohol and coffee consumption.
