Abstract
GUILARTE SELVA, Osiris Taimy et al. Clinical and epidemiological characterization of diabetic patients in a health area. MEDISAN [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.5, pp.820-827. ISSN 1029-3019.
An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted, in order to characterize 66 diabetic patients of «Ramón López Peña» University Polyclinic of Santiago de Cuba during 2010. Among analyzed variables were age, sex, age at diagnosis, and time of disease course, personal and family medical history, environmental risk factors and complications. In the series diabetes mellitus type 2 was the most frequent, with prevalence in women and older ages, associated with other conditions (hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia) and unhealthy lifestyles (sedentary lifestyle, smoking habit, diet rich in saturated fat). The long course of the disease along with uncontrolled metabolism detected in many of these patients led to the occurrence of neurological, visual and cardiovascular complications.
