Abstract

An overview is provided of the origin of the Cuban Librarian´s Day, the emergence of libraries in Cuba, and the historical development and current situation of the first medical library in Santiago de Cuba province, with emphasis in the work of its librarians from their opening to date. Also aspects related to the services offered in the libraries of the health sciences and the competences that its librarians and documentalists should have in the XXI century are discussed. Finally, the recognition is expressed to those partners who began this activity with so much love and dedication, and they facilitated the professionals of health sciences of the territory the access to the information.
