A study of costs description was carried out in "Mar Verde" Prison in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2008 to December, 2009, with the objective of calculating the direct and indirect pertinent costs for the diagnosis and treatment of patients infected by syphilis, for which the results were compared before and after developing an educational intervention in the prisoners population, by a group of selected and prepared promoters in the prevention of sexual transmission infections. The impact of the intervention was measured by means of a decrease in the number the affected prisoners with syphilis.
