A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 39 newborns under 6 months, assisted in the Puericulture Department from the Municipal Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, was carried out from January to March, 2012, in order to analyze the main aspects related to the exclusive maternal nursing, for which a survey was applied that included clinical, social and demographic aspects. A low proportion of mothers who fed their children with maternal milk was found in the case material; therefore, it was shown that deficiencies existed in the promotion work and support to the maternal nursing. It was recommended to make a deeper preparation and training of the health staff to offer effective counseling to the mothers of newborns.
