Abstract

An observational, descriptive and cross sectional study of 96 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, admitted in the Pneumology Service of "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out from January to December, 2013, in order to characterize them clinically and epidemiologically. The male sex, the age group 50-59 years, dyspnea, cough and fever as fundamental reasons for admission, hypertension and heart failure as the most frequent comorbidities; the smoking habit as the most important risk factor prevailed, with prevalence of those patients affected for more than 20 years. According to the severity of the disorder, the degrees serious and very serious prevailed, which reached the partial breathing failure and the chronic heart pulmonary disease, exacerbated mainly by infections and inadequate treatments
