The National Program of Integral Care to the elderly is vital in Cuba and requires a system of permanent professional training to guarantee the quality of the service, from the primary health care. In this work, the aspects and historical tendencies of the professional training process will be taken into account; directed to comprehensive general doctors for care of the elderly in Santiago de Cuba. In turn, the historical aspects of the Comprehensive General Doctor´s professional training for the care of the elderly will be analyzed. Taking into account the historical trends identified, it is also necessary to promote a training action to foment knowledge among professionals related to the growth of the aging population in Santiago de Cuba. Finally, the lack of actions aimed at providing better care to this age group as a prioritized program of the National Health System will be assessed.
