Introduction:

The Narrative medicine is a tool of medical education that uses the experience and personal narrative of patients and suppliers to increase the scientific understanding of the disease.

Objective:

To demonstrate the effectiveness of narrative medicine as pedagogic tool in the professional training for the prevention of maternal and child transmission of the HIV and congenital syphilis.

Method:

A mixed investigation was carried out on 38 family doctors from José Martí Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba during January - March 2024; with the implementation of surveys, interviews and focal groups to evaluate the effectiveness of the narrative medicine course and the Donald Kirkpatrick pattern of evaluation was also used. The results were processed and percentage was used as summary measure.

Results:

The 92 % of medical staff were satisfied with the use of narrative medicine in the prevention and control of STIs; 81.6 % acquired knowledge and skills and they agreed to apply and practice what they learned in equal proportion. The results of interviews coincide with the above-mentioned.

Conclusions:

Family doctors perceived narratives as effective, important and useful; they proposed to generalize it in medical education.
