Resumen

HODELIN TABLADA, Ricardo. 130 years after the assassination attempt on Antonio Maceo in San José, Costa Rica. MEDISAN [online]. 2024, vol.28, n.6  Epub 07-Dic-2024. ISSN 1029-3019.

Antonio Maceo Grajales was the victim of several attempts on his life. The government of the metropolis considered that with his death the insurrectionists would cease their struggle for the independence of the island. As early as 1870, Maceo held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Liberation Army; the Spaniards sent Manuel Hechavarría to their area of operations in Maroto, near Majaguabo, with the aim of assassinating him; once captured, he was handed over to General Máximo Gómez and executed. With the same objective, in 1874, they took José de las Mercedes Colás out of prison with the offer of freedom and money to kill him. On 10 November 1894, another assassination attempt was made, this time in San José, Costa Rica. Maceo had gone to the Teatro Variedades to enjoy a play. At the end of the performance, a group of Spaniards instructed by José Vélez y Corrales, the Spanish consul in Costa Rica, shot him in the back, and the wounded Bronze Titan had to receive immediate medical assistance. This article highlights the characteristics of the attack, the details of the trial, as well as an interesting letter written by the Hero of Baraguá to the President of the Republic Rafael Iglesias Castro. This text pays tribute to the legendary Cuban hero on the 130th anniversary of the event.
