Introduction: atherosclerotic diseases are the first cause of death in the world, it begins in the childhood and when acting on the risk factors associated to this disease, it and its sequelae can be prevented. Objective: to establish the atherosclerosis risk factors behavior in adolescents. Methods: a cross- sectional study in 177 adolescents from 12 to 13 years old in Velasco health area, between January to May 2011 was carried out. A simple random sampling in a universe of 331 adolescents was done. The variables age, sex, origin, blood pressure, obesity, sedentary life style, toxic habits and family history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus or renal disease were studied. Results: more than 60% of the adolescents had atherosclerotic risk factors, which were higher in those from urban origin. The most frequent risk factors were the sedentary life (40. 68%), the family history of hypertension (23.73%) and the obesity. In relation to the sex, a predominance of the sedentary life and the hypertension in the female sex was observed, while the obesity (8.47%) , cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption were higher in male sex. Conclusion: most of adolescents showed atherosclerotic risk factors that is why it is necessary to begin the prevention since the childhood due to the high social and economic cost.
