Abstract

Introduction: the recommendations of Pan-American Health Organization (PHO) about the need of reinforcing surveillance measures on cholera, updating prevention programs and implementing adequate health strategies, represent an immediate need to update and get better the planning against cholera. Objective: to develop a strategy for the control and prevention of any disaster of sanitary origin. Method: the analysis of the risk of disaster was developed estimating the vulnerability of the possible entrance of the Vibrio cholera in Holguín, 2010; the brainstorming was used to evaluate cholera as a real imminent risk. A  deep  revision, analysis and improving of the prevention and control planning of cholera was made, adequating and improving the system of epidemiological surveillance to the current circunstances, and more effective new strategies were proposed, to contain at the minimal risk, the introduction and cholera dissemination. Results: a strategy for the prevention and control of any disaster of sanitary origin, able to have at the minimal risk of dissemination of the Vibrio cholerae in Holguin was developed. A system of epidemiological surveillance was strengthened and the Health Povincial System was organized to guarantee medical and hygienic-epidemiological issues, to avoid the spread of the cholera in this province. Conclusions: the strategies for the control and prevention of the cholera in Holguin were presented, its permant implementation is important adequating them to the new circunstancies.
