Resumen

Introduction: the surgical treatment in the newborn is complex because this kind of patient needs of highly specialized institutions for the medical care. Objective: to show the results, in the surgical newborn, in   Holguin. Method: a retrospective study was conducted in infants, at Octavio de la Conception y de la Pedraja University Pediatric Hospital, in the period from July 1th, 1994 to December 31st, 2012. A descriptive study was done at first and the second part was a quasi-experimental one in the four years 2004-2007 and 2009-2012 in newborns with surgical treatment of Santiago de Cuba. The first of January 2009 began the care from the Regional Center of Neonatal Surgery of the five eastern provinces in Holguín. Results: in the period 2004-2008 in Holguín, a survival of 91.9 % was obtained. In the four-year period 2009-2012, this result was maintained, despite addressing children with complex malformations from the rest of the eastern provinces and 97.2 % of survival was obtained regarding esophageal atresia anomaly. Mortality in complex conditions is a specific indicator to assess the degree of development of a Neonatal Surgery service. In surgical infants of Santiago de Cuba, when they were assisted in their province, obtained a mortality of 53.6 % and in the Regional Center of Holguín was of 10.7 %; to apply a measure of potential impact mortality in 48 % of these children is reduced as a result of the treatment in Holguín. Conclusion: in Holguín, in the period 2004-2008 actions leading up to a higher survival outcome were developed. In the four years of attention from the Regional Center was maintained that achievement and reduced the mortality of patients treated in Santiago de Cuba in comparison to those that were attended in the hospital of their province of origin.
