Introduction: a number of factors that have influence the abandonment of breastfeeding affect maternal and child health. Objective: to describe the factors that have influence the early abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding in Guaro health area of Mayarí municipality. Method: a case series study composed of all births of Guaro ​​health area, Mayarí municipality (n = 182) and the sample is represented by the total number of infants who presented an abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding before six months in the period from  January- December 2011 (n = 92). Results: mothers from 20-24 years predominated with a total of 27 patients (29.3 %), and the secondary school level for 36 patients (39.1 %). Working mothers (40.2 %) or students (36.9 %) were the most affected ones. The level of knowledge about breastfeeding before pregnancy was poor in 23 patients representing 25.0 % and the main causes of interruption of breastfeeding were those women who began to work representing 28.2 % and 23.9 % of those who began to study. Conclusions: the factors that affected the efficient development of exclusive breastfeeding were the low level of maternal education, working mothers and students and limited prior information in the preconception period. No association between exclusive breastfeeding and age was found
