Abstract

Introduction:

in elderly people, the aging characteristics create particular stages of nutrition. Early malnutrition detection has a significant effect on morbidity and mortality in the elder’s community.

Objective:

to characterize the nutritional status of elderly people in a health area.

Method:

a cross-sectional study was carried out in the 21st office of “René Ávila Reyes Polyclinic”, from January, 2016 to January, 2017. Universe was 173 and sample 45 elders, selected by means of intentional non-probabilistic sampling.

Results:

there was a predominance of female sex up to 64.44%, from which ages between 65 to 70 reached a 57.78%, secondary schooling had a 37.78%, married (marital status) a 66.67%, arterial hypertension had a 80%, overweight represented the 35.56%, satisfactory nutritional status had 88.89% according to malnutrition indicator score, coffee consumption with 80% and less than three medications per day 60%.

There were significant differences in height, body mass index and Hb between both sexes; but not in weight, leukocytes, total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL. Patients with malnutrition excess presented a superior skinfolds, calf circumference and waist circumference averages, in relation to patients with normal weight. Biochemical parameters did not show significant differences in both groups.

Conclusions:

women predominated, married with low educational level, a history of hypertension, coffee consumption and polypharmacy. In the nutritional assessment, the majority was patients with malnutrition excess, and in the nutritional mini-survey the satisfactory nutritional status predominated.
