Introduction:

subprosthesis stomatitis is the inflammation of the supporting prosthesis mucosa.

Objective:

to describe the clinical and epidemiological behavior of this disease in a population that carries prosthesis.

Method:

a cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in patients from Buenaventura, at René Guzmán Pérez Clinic, from Calixto García municipality, Holguín province, Cuba, from October 2016 to June 2018. The universe was 835 patients with removable prostheses. Sample selection was 140 patients by simple random sampling, according to 95% significance level, 80% statistical power, 30% prevalence, an accuracy of 5% and a design effect of 1, with the employment of EPIDAT 4.1.

Results:

the average age of the patients with stomatitis subprosthesis was 69.75 (11.50) years significantly higher than 57.11 (12.69) of the patients without stomatitis; 62.14% of patients were men.

Stomatitis prevalence was 45.71%, with predominance of grades I (22.14%) and II (18.57%). Diabetes mellitus prevalence, in patients with stomatitis was 60.47% and smoking habit had a 59.09%.

Conclusions:

a high prevalence of stomatitis subprosthesis was found, mainly grade I and II in older adults with associated risk factors. The main risk factors were poor oral hygiene, total prosthesis and long preparation time. A cohort study is recommended to evaluate the long-term effect.
