Diabetes mellitus is the most frequent blindness cause among active population of developed countries. The introduction of macular optical coherence tomography has a wide diffusion to identify retinal pathologies. Therefore, we proposed to identify the application of macular optical coherence tomography in the staging of diabetic retinopathy, using a comprehensive literature review in Science Direct, Virtual Health Library, PubMed Health until February 2018. Results showed this technique importance identifying injuries by diabetic retinopathy and its classification in the initials phases of the disease.
