BORREGO DIAZ, René Ángel; GONZALEZ SAPSIN, Karina  y  PEREZ MESA, Juan Carlos. Clinical evaluation of ozone treatment in herniated discs. Territorial Oncological Center, Holguín, 2017. ccm [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.1, pp.4-18.  Epub 01-Mar-2020. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction:

the large number of clinical manifestations that herniated discs cause, and the functional limitations they produce were the reasons for the implementation of the treatment with ozone, due to the benefits reported when using this therapy.

Objective:

to determine the effect of ozone therapy on clinical parameters in the herniated disc patient at the Territorial Oncology Center of Holguín during year 2017.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive case series study that included 137 patients attended in the ozone therapy consultation with confirmed diagnosis of herniated discs, and still showing symptoms, despite the different conventional treatments performed. Symptoms were assessed prior to treatment, at the end of treatment and six months after completion. They were given either rectal or paravertebral treatment.

Results:

pain was present in 94.16% of patients, followed by paresthesia in 87.59%. A good response was achieved at the end of treatment in 86.13% of patients, and these results remained after six months in 82.48%. The results obtained are considered very successful, if we take into account that the group of patients treated was the one with no response to the usual treatments.

Conclusions:

clinical evolution of patients with lumbar disc herniation, treated with ozone therapy, was favourable. No undesirable effects of the therapy were observed during the treatment.

Palabras clave : herniated disc; ozone therapy; pain; paresthesia.
