CARRILLO MENDIBURU, Josué; MENDIBURU ZAVALA, Celia Elena; LOPEZ UGALDE, Adriana Carolina  y  MOISES HERNANDEZ, Jorge Francisco. Anxiety levels and temporomandibular dysfunction in medical residents of Dr. Eduardo Liceaga General Hospital, Mexico. ccm [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.1, pp. 53-72.  Epub 01-Mar-2020. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction:

as anxiety increases, it may induce pathological manifestations and cause repeated muscular overload in the temporomandibular joint.

Objectives:

relate the anxiety level (AL) to the degree of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), in medical residents of Eduardo Liceaga General Hospital, Mexico, in the period from May to July 2018.

Methods:

correlational, comparative, cross-sectional study. The sample was 184 medical residents. Descriptive statistics are used for single variables and inferential for correlations between variables (Spearman's coefficient). Three self-assessment questionnaires are provided: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), consisting of 2 questionnaires, and one to measure the degree of TMD, "Fonseca Anamnestic Index" (FAI).

Results:

47.8% were women (n = 88), and 52.2%, men (n = 96); 87.5% (n = 161) were between 21 and 31 years old, and 12.5% (n = 23), between 32 and 40 years old; 48.9% (n = 90) had a non-surgical specialty and 51.1% (n = 94), a surgical one; 9.8% (n = 18) were married, 2.2% (n = 4) divorced, 83.7% (n = 154) single, and 4.3% (n = 8) unmarried. 72.8% (n = 134) showed low AL. The degree of TMD: 44% (n = 81) did not present any, and 56% (n = 103) did; in 3.8% (n = 7) it was severe. There is a statistically significant, moderate and directly proportional (r = 0.406; p < 0.001) relationship between LA and TMD.

Conclusions:

the higher the LA, the higher the degree of TMD.

Palabras clave : temporomandibular joint dysfunction; anxiety; stomatognathic system.
