Resumen

MEDRANO MONTERO, Jacqueline et al. Myotherapy in children with neuromuscular dysfunctions. ccm [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.1, pp.87-100.  Epub 01-Mar-2020. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction:

the muscles are natural forces of the maxillofacial complex that play a fundamental role in oral balance and normal occlusion, so the position of the teeth is subject to the influences that they exert around and within the mouth.

Objective:

to evaluate the effectiveness of myotherapy in 9-11 years old children with neuromuscular dysfunctions.

Method:

a quasi-experimental study was conducted in 30 children from the area of Manuel Angulo Farrán Teaching Dental Clinic of Holguín. The sample was selected by deliberate sampling and distributed in three groups according to the treatment to be applied: myotherapy, functional device or combination of both.

Results:

60% of children affected with neuromuscular dysfunction were female. In 99.7% of those examined the labial muscle group was the most affected. The combined treatment with myotherapy + device was the most effective compared to the other alternatives, with 33.3% effectiveness in the treated children and in all the affected muscle groups. An 86.2% effectiveness of the treatment was achieved in the labial muscle group.

Conclusions:

the combined treatment, myotherapy + device, was found to be the most effective, with the highest percentage of effectiveness in the labial muscle group. We recommend generalizing the use of myotherapeutic exercises in the primary care of Stomatology, thus reducing the high frequency of neuromuscular dysfunctions and the dentomaxillofacial anomalies that these cause from an early age.

Palabras clave : myotherapy; neuromuscular dysfunctions; orthodontic treatment; electromyography.
