Gout is an inflammatory arthritis associated with hyperuricemia, it is characterized by the crystallization of monosodium urate in the joints and tissues. It produces a substantial morbidity due to pain in acute gouty arthritis and joint deformities in chronic tophaceous gout. It is linked to systemic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Environmental and genetic factors contribute to hyperuricemia. Gout is the result of an inflammatory response to the crystals and the treatment strategies that dissolve the crystals are crucial for its effective handling. Healthy dietary habits and serum uric acid reducing drugs can contribute to a better control of uricemia and diseases associated with gout. This review describes the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gout.
