Introduction:

Psychological safety is the premise and result of proper biosecurity management. Its practical introduction into the current pandemic by COVID-19 makes it easier to move towards a more integrative conception, consistent with the biopsychosocial approach to health in the Cuban health system.

Objective:

To describe the theoretical and methodological design of contents on psychological safety training, for health personnel working directly with patients affected by COVID-19.

Methods:

A descriptive, developmental investigation was conducted at Lucía Iñiguez Hospital from March to May 2020. Theoretical methods, such as systematic and documentary analysis, were used.

Results:

The designed program contains three thematic units: preparation to form work teams for psychological self-help, self-management of specific emotional states and communication of bad news. The psychological foundations are described, expressed in the essential contents and its methodological structure whith objectives, themes, forms of teaching organization and evaluation system.

Conclusions:

The introduction of psychological safety training through the designed program favors adequate biosecurity management, which is essential in the current circumstances. This contributes to preserve mental health of health personnel who face the direct care of patients, guaranteeing the sustainability of hospital processes and the quality of their performance.
