Introduction:

COVID-19 is an emergent infectious disease with high transmissibility, morbidity and mortality. To prevent transmission, it is necessary to establish Biological Safety measures such as isolation of confirmed patients, suspects and contacts. In Contact Isolation Centers, to minimize the risk of contagion, biosafety protocols based on the principle of biological containment should be implemented.

Objective:

To design a biosafety protocol for isolation centers for the bioprotection of workers, patients and the environment.

Method:

A pre-experimental study was carried out in the period from April to May, 2020, with the use of theoretical methods like dialectical-materialistic, systemic-structural and historical-logical, as well as empirical methods such as epidemiological observation and documentary review of studies on working with biological agents, including those related to Covid-19, which allowed to establish the regularities and contradictions between the object of study and the research problem. Descriptive statistics were used as a mathematical method, which facilitated the analysis, processing and presentation of the selected variables through simple frequency tables. Risk assessment was done using William Fine's method, adapted to the context of the institution, before and after the implementation of the protocol.

Results:

It was proven that there is an absence of specific biosafety protocols for Covid-19 contact isolation centers. A biosafety protocol was designed and applied in the Isolation Center at Filial de Ciencias Médicas Comandante Arides Estévez Sánchez in Holguín. Biological Risk Assessment was carried out to verify the effectiveness of the protocol.

Conclusions:

the application of the protocol allowed workers to perform under biosafety conditions with minimum risk of contagion.
