Resumen

Mortality from diabetes mellitus in “Centro Habana” municipality. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2001, vol.12, n.3, pp.151-157. ISSN 1561-2953.

A descriptive study of all the deaths occurred in “Centro Habana” municipality, “Ciudad de la Habana” province, was conducted to know the behavior of mortality from diabetes mellitus. All the death certificates registered from 1993 to 1995, including both (n=5 337), were reviewed, and those whose basic cause of death was diabetes were selected. Sex and age were determined and the results of mortality in “Centro Habana” municipality were compared with those of the rest of the country. Mortality was expressed in gross rate x 100 000 inhabitants. These rates were significantly higher in “Centro Habana” municipality on comparing them with those of “Ciudad de la Habana” province and with those of the country. Mortality prevailed among females in the above-mentioned municipality and in Cuba. In “Centro Habana” municipality, the age group 65 and over showed a gross rate x 100 000 inhabitants of 231.6, in 1993, vs. 163.4 in the country, and one of 214,1 vs. 170.0, in 1995, which demonstrates the existance of a higher mortality in this munuicipality. It was proved that the highest percentage of deaths occurred in the age group 65-79. It was concluded that mortality from diabetes was remarkably higher in “Centro Habana” muncipality when it was compared with that of “Ciudad de la Habana” province and with that of the country. It was considered that the absence of deaths in subjects under 15 was the result of the comprehensive attention received by this age group. It was stressed the need of inisiting on the search for risk factors in this population and of intensifying and improving the implementation of the National Diabetes Program.
