The present paper made a review of the present knowledge on regulation of intracellular concentrations of calcium ion, the main mechanisms of inlet/outlet through the plasma membrane, with special attention to Na+/Ca2+, and the function of this important second messenger in insulin secretion and in programmed cell death of pancreatic cells.
