Resumen
LEDON LLANES, Loraine et al. The price of transformation: reflections based on the experience of persons living with endocrinopathies. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2004, vol.15, n.3. ISSN 1561-2953.
The present qualitative and exploratory study recommended to research the disease process perceived by persons that live with endocrine diseases producing corporal transformations. 15 adults of the endocrinology service of "Guillermo Almenara" Hospital, Lima, Peru, with corporal transformations resulting from the disease and/or treatment, entered the study. Observation, informal interviews and in-depth interview guides were used as tools. The informations was transcribed, codified, triangulated and interpreted. It was observed that the disease process, considered as stigmatizing, influenced on the life spaces and on the fulfillment of the traditional roles of gender. Males were considered inactive and dependent, which damaged the image as providers and "family heads". As to females, the disease hindered their domestic performance and their role of family caretakers. It was concluded that the history of reconstructed life responded to "logic" defined by the impacts. The impact areas were connected with social interaction. The identity processes were central.
