Resumen

GONZALEZ FERNANDEZ, Pedro. Growth and development in drepanocytosis. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.1. ISSN 1561-2953.

Drepanocytosis is a group of congenital hemolytic anemias that includes drepanocytic anemia (SS): 60.0, hemoglobinopathy (SC): 30.0 and S/ß thalassemia: 10.0. These are the most frequent hemolytic anemias in the world. In Cuba, the incidence of the carrier state is of 13.2 % in black, 4.1 in mestizoes and 0.6 in white individuals. It reaches 3.08 % of the general population. The affectation of growth and development in these patients has been a very discussed topic and the hormonal dysfunctions, the nutritional deficiencies, the socioeconomic factors and the disorders of the osteoarticular system are considered as possible causes related to this alteration. A review of these aspects is made in national and foreign literature. It is concluded that growth deficiency may be related to tissue hypoxia caused by severe anemia, the acute and chronic effects of vasoocclusion, the endocrine dysfunction associated with anemia, a poor diet, the elevated energy requirements, and the low socioeconomic status.
