ESPINOSA REYES, Tania et al. Sexual maturation in children presenting with Type 1 diabetes mellitus treated with multiple dose of insulin.. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2007, vol.18, n.1. ISSN 1561-2953.
Before insulin therapy, menarche and subsequent menstruation rarely appear in girls presenting Type 1 diabetes mellitus (MD 1) from childhood, and in boys a significicant pubertal retardation was confirmed. Aim of present paper is to assess onset of puberty, influence of diagnosis age of diabetes, and degree of metabolic control, on sexual development in a cohort of children seen in service of Infantile Endocrinlogy. A non-concurrent prospective study of medical records of patients treated withmultiple dose of insulin, from 32 boys and 28 girls resident in urban areas) lenghwise followed by clinical examinatio and periodic biochemical determinarions fron onset of 1 MD to achieve its final height. Metabolic control was assessed by means of glycolised hemoglobin (HbA1) performed quarterly, and classified by Institution criteria as good (G); < 8 %; regular (R): 8-10; and poor (P): > 10 %. Mean age with a testicular volume of 4 mL was of 12,5 ? 8 years; in girls onset of breast development contrasted with average age of 11,4 years, and menarche occured at 12,9 ? 1,2 years. Also, it was confirmed that 31 patients have a B metabolic control (51,6 %), 11 R (36,7 %), and 7 M (11,7 %). It was conclude that treatment with multiple dose of insulin has a favourable end decisive influence on degree of metabolic control, whith allows a appropriate pubertal development in patients presenting 1 MD.
