Resumen

NAVARRO DESPAIGNE, Daysi A. et al. Bone quality in women of mean age. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2007, vol.18, n.1. ISSN 1561-2953.

Osteoporosis means an increase of fracture risk and also a decrease of life expentancy, above all of postmenopausal women. It is possible to detect susceptible persons to this entity, although there is a lack of studies reporting bone quality in postmenopausal Cuban women. To determine frequency of a poor bone quality in women of mean age, and to determine some associated factors, a transversal and drescriptive suty was made from January 2003 to December 2004, in a group composed by women aged between 40 and 59 from “Heroes del Moncada” Polyclinic (n= 252), and another 70 assisting consecutevely to Climateric and Osteoporosis Clinic (ClimOs). In each woman present age was determined, skin color, smoking, and present climateric stage, and those presenting with diabetes mellitus we also assessed disease evolution time, which treatment hypoglucemic is prescribed, as well as level of glycosilated hemoglobin. Assessment of bone quality was performed by heel ultrasound (US). As result, it was possible to achieve a rate of poor quality bone among primary care women of 5/1000 women. Among persons present to ClimOs, 34,5 % has a poor bone quality with a greater frequency (p, 0.05) among diabetic ones, and age between 50 and 59 years and postmenospausal perior, were the more frequent factors associated with a poor quality bone, although influence of diabetes mellitus wasn't determined.

Palabras clave : Bone quality; diabetes mellitus; hell ultrasound; climateric.
