OBJETIVE: to identify association between a lifestyle healthy for bone quality in women of mean age. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was performed including 103 women aged 45 and 59 of primary care from "Vedado" Teaching Polyclinic in which, by means of a self-applied questionnaire, we determine the criteria relative to a favorable lifestyle for a bone health; and 259 women of similar age, assisting consecutively to Climaterium and Osteoporosis Clinic (ClimOs) of National Institute of Endocrinology, in which we determine bone age (good or poor) and bone mineral content in lumbar spine (L2-L4) by means of dual absorptiometry of X rays. En both cases, family background of fragility-fracture, body mass index (BMI), reproductive period, and climaterium stage with bone quality and health. By means of self-applied questionnaire we know on osteoporosis. To establish intra-groups differences we used T-test (quantitative variables),2Chi-test (qualitative variables), and Fisher's test for intra-groups differences according to bone quality, and analysis of logistic regression to detect risk of variables on bone quality. RESULTS: in women from primary care, 83,5 % had a non-favorable lifestyle to a good bone health, and knowledge on osteoporosis was unfavorable in 93,3 %. In women seen in ClimOS, 62 % had a poor bone quality, aged 45-59, white-skin, more of 5 postmenopausal years, and the family backgrounds of bone fragility were factors influencing in a negative way on bone quality and health (p<0,05). Using logistic regression analysis we noted that family background of fragility-fracture increased in 3,3 times the risk of a poor bone quality, and ovarian function in 2,3 times. Survey-population has a high frequency of poor bone quality, hasn't a relative knowledge on bone care, that is why it is necessary to increase actions promoting healthy lifestyles, as well as to detect the population susceptible to a poor bone quality
