A study of the multiple causes of death of Cuban one-year old or over population is presented. Information was taken from a sample of 2 036 deaths occurred in 22 municipalities during 4 months in a row. Death certificates were made by preciously trained Internal Medicine experts. The causes written in these certificates were classified according to international recommendations. A listing of the main underlying causes of death with their key conditioning, intervening and contributing causes are provided in which the incidence of arteriosclerosis and arterial hypertension as contributing causes is stressed.
