Abstract

As a result of the increase of the foci of Aedes aegypti observed in Havana City during the first semester of 1997, it was decided to use experimental epidemiology to know if there have been changes in the knowledge, habits and behavior of the population regarding the mosquito prevention, and to compare the results with those of a previous study conducted in November, 1995. This epidemiological method was utilized in the 15 municipalities of the city through interpersonal and group communication and through the mass media. Educational materials were made and validated surveys were applied to 596 persons. On comparing the results, it was found an improvement of the konwoledge and a favorable modifications of the populations’s attitudes in relation to the preventive measures to avoid the foci of this vector. It was also detected that most of the population perceives the risk.
