It is presented a methodology to study water. This procedure with efficient human and material resources allows to identify the contaminating hydrocarbons, to quantify them, to determine their source, and to follow them up. To this end, the analysis techniques to determine hydrocarbons by the number of incipient smell and by the ultraviolet method are combined. The simplification carried out by this method to approach this type of contamination permits its use in chemical laboratories with limited material resources, making possible its generalization to centers having basic laboratory equipment.
