The accreditation of test laboratories is nowadays a necessity to guarantee the reliability of their results. In Cuba, the National Standardization Office (NSO) accredits the technical competence of the test laboratories in accordance with the regulations established by the International Standardization Organization (ISO). In 1993, the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry Laboratory of the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology was accredited by the NSO to perfom assays with toxic metals in environmental and biological samples. The characteristics of the laboratory quality system and the main experiences obtained throung creation and work are presented here.
