Abstract
GONZALEZ VALIENTE, María Luisa and CONILL DIAZ, Tomasa Paula. Mortalidad por intoxicaciones agudas producidas por plaguicidas: Cuba, 1990-1994. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 1999, vol.37, n.2, pp.76-81. ISSN 0253-1751.
A statistical, descriptive and retrospectivd study of mortality due to acute poisonings produced by pesticides in Cuba during 1990-1994 was conducted. The 629 deaths occurred were studied by epidemiological variables obtained by the mortality system. Rates ranging from 0.9 to 1.5 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants were registered. These figures accentuate the discrete ascending trend observed since 1987 when the population groups at higher risk of death because of this cause are males, children under 4, and adults aged 35-39 and 55-59. As a result of these premature deaths there was a total of 19 212 years of life potentially lost. The voluntary circunstances prevailed and the organophosphate insecticides were the commonest causal agents of these accidents.
