With the objective of exploridng knowledge and attitudes of the population of Centro Havana municipality as to basic environmental sanitaion, a descriptive crosswise study was made qith 136 577 people who represent the total population aged 15 years or over living in the 5 people?s councils of this municpality. A questionnaire was prepared to this end and applied to a sample selected by a simple random sampling without replacement, and the size of the sample was adjusted to 200 people from each council. They were questioned about water supply, disposal of liquid and solid wastes and the control of vectors, among others. Variables related to knowledge and attitudes were evaluated by giving a value of 10 points to each of them. The final evaluation consisted of grading the answers to each variable and classifying them in five levels. For the analysis of the results there was a data base with ACCES processor. The outcome shows a poor sanitary education of a sizeable part of the population, which in turns has an incidence on the inhabitants´ attitudes.
