A study was conducted to know the prevalence of the hepatitis B surface antigen in a randomly selected sample from "Raúl Sánchez" health area, in 1995. A seroepidemilogic survey was done and the immunoenzimatic method (ELISA) was used. A prevalence of the studied marker equal to 4.2 % was detected. The highest prevalence was found in the age group 15-29. As regards the factors considered as risk factors, there were statistically significant differences that show a higher percentage of positivity among those living together with suspected cases or with the sick. The index of subclinical infecton was 76.4 %.
