The collection of microbial cultures of the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of Cuba (NIHEM) with more than 10 years of existance has had a fundamental mission the provision of type microorganisms for the quality control of the culture media and reagents produced in the institution that are utilized in the microbiological control of environmental samples. Since the mid-80's, a gradual development has conditioned its diversification as regards functions, bacterial species and scientific and technical services. The maintenance of 290 viable bacterial strains, the establishment of a quality system according to the criteria of the standing accrediting systems, and the external supply of microorganisms as reference material have been the most significant achievements.
