Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2004, vol.42, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3003.
The objective of the present paper is to describe the calculation of the specific cause mortality risk adjusted by the competitive mortality probability. To this end, the risk for dying of breast cancer before being 75 years old was calculated with or without adjusting the competitive mortality probability by the method called life table and the data from 1998 included in the mortality register of Castilla-La Mancha. It was observed that if the conditions existing in 1998 were maintained and they were not adjusted by the competitive mortality probability, 1 out of 65 women from Castilla-La Mancha would die of breast cancer before being 75. On adjusting by other possible death causes, the risk would be reduced to 1 out of 71 women. It was concluded that it is a simple method through which you can adjust the death risk by competitive mortality and provide health managers and planners with data closer to reality..
